LineageOS 23.0: Android 16 as the base

LineageOS 23.0 is based on Android 16 (QPR0). Due to Google's new patch policy, security updates can arrive late, and older kernels are dropped.

  • First LineageOS version based on Android 16, specifically on the first Android 16 release (QPR0)
  • Material 3 Expressive is still missing because Google had not published the QPR1 source code in AOSP at release time
  • The security patch level is only raised once all patches are publicly available
  • Android 16 requires Linux 5.4 or newer, so many devices with kernel 4.4 and 4.9 stay on LineageOS 22.2 for now

LineageOS 23.0 was announced on October 11, 2025 in Changelog 30. In it, the project explains in detail why there is a version 23.0 instead of 23.1: Google no longer publishes quarterly updates (QPR) and many security patches to AOSP right away.

The successor is LineageOS 23.2. All versions are on the LineageOS overview.
